Zulu War British Imperial Forces

Zulu War

Ever since I saw the film Zulu as a child I have been fascinated with this war. I am very interested in all the forces that the British Empire marshalled for this war, the locally raised units of volunteers, irregulars and auxiliaries are now of greater interest to me since Empress Miniatures have expanded their excellent Zulu War range of figures. I am going to be painted up some of the lesser know units such as the Natal Hussars, Victoria Mounted Rifles, Durban Mounted Rifles and the Newcastle Mounted Rifles. These will all probably be painted using Empress Miniatures with some slight conversion work.

24th Regiment of Foot

I will start by posting pictures of the 24th Regiment of Foot, I don't think I need to tell any of you about this regiment's service during the Zulu War. These figures are by Black Tree Designs and are nice figures, great poses and variety, they are also a real bargain with the large deals offered by BTD. I will be posting other painted figures of the 24th by Foundry and Empress Miniatures for comparison purposes.

This first company are on the march, figures are based on 50mm x 50mm x 3mm wooden bases.

King's Dragoon Guards

The King's Dragoon Guards were one of the few cavalry regiments to be deployed during the Zulu War. The figures are 28mm Black Tree Design miniatures. They are based on 50mm x 50mm x 2mm wooden bases. The flag is not correct but I was unable to find a manufacturer that makes the KDG flag for this period, so some artistic licence came into play with a GMB Designs flag.

This is a great vignette from Black Tree Designs, I hope they gave the patient a drop of medicinal brandy before Hook drank it all.
